Woodlands High School Senior Jadyn Washington Leads Bowling Team to Greatness
WMHS senior Jadyn Washington had barely started attending school when he realized that bowling was right up his alley. He won his first tournament, along with scholarship money, when he was just 5 years old, the first of many wins and accolades to follow. Jadyn began bowling with the Woodlands Varsity bowling team when he was in seventh grade and the team has not lost a league championship since; nor have they lost a single match since 2018! Jadyn has been team captain for the past three years and has led the team to a regional championship, two sectional championships and, twice, to the coveted rank of New York State Finalist.
This year, the Boys and Girls Varsity Bowling teams continued to demonstrate their ability on the lanes and ranked as ‘Runner-Up’ at the recent Sectional competition both falling mere pins from the gold. For the boys not only did they capture the silver medal and plaque, but they also had two individual honors that day. Notably, senior Jonathan Hector had a great performance with the tournament high score at the Section 1 Bowling Championships. He almost threw a perfect game which is a 300, 12 strikes in a row. The high game award and Jadyn’s All-Star selection was the cherry on top for the boys season which included a record 8th straight league championship! Notably, Jadyn is only the second person in Woodlands’ history to qualify for the States as an individual, and he is the first to qualify for both team and individual competition.
Individually, Jadyn is one of the most decorated high school bowlers in New York State and has had another exceptional year. In less than two weeks, he came in second place in the All Westchester County JBT Adult/Junior Tournament in the Scratch Division and then during the Section 1 Bowling Championships, Jadyn qualified for the NYSPHSAA Bowling State Championships in Syracuse by being one of the top three bowlers for all six games. While at the states, In Syracuse, Jadyn’s 259 was a top ten score out of 80 All-Star, All-Section Bowlers from all of the sections from around the state. His second half 675 series helped bring the Section 1 All-Star Team from 7th to a 3rd place Bronze medal finish, falling merely eight pins short of the Silver.
Reflecting on his time, Jadyn said: “it’s been an amazing experience being on this team. We have a winning culture here and we all push each other. I’ve been on multiple versions of this team and every version has had great chemistry with each other”.
While the Woodlands community is extremely proud of Jadyn’s exceptional athleticism, we also take great pride in the way he plays the games and treats his teammates and competitors. To that end, Jadyn was unanimously chosen to receive the Section 1 Sportsmanship Award at the State Finals. What’s more, Coach Samuel Washington Jr. received the well-deserved honor of being selected to coach the Boys Section 1 All-Section, All-Star Team.
Coach Washington says that Jadyn’s contributions to this team can not be overstated and that he “literally built this version of the team by recruiting his friends a few years ago.”
“Jadyn was already an established bowler and could have taken the time to focus on himself to achieve personal accomplishments; insead, he took time to help coach and teach his friends the game and even donated some of his personal equipment to those who needed it,” said Coach Washington. “He is unselfish and had the foresight that we could stretch the team dynasty longer if we worked together. We have all benefited from that type of leadership. As he and his friends graduate this year, we are indebted to him and he will surely be missed.”
Jadyn has earned a long list of accolades throughout his incredibly successful time at WMHS. He was named All-League each of his six years on the Woodlands team, recognized by LoHud as one of the top bowlers in Westchester/Putnam counties, and chosen as MVP of the entire Southern Westchester league, including large schools, with the highest average.
As if this wasn’t enough, Jadyn is also a sanctioned bowler with the US Bowling Congress who had been nationally ranked following great success at a National Junior Gold Tournament and placing third in a national DV8 tournament in Indianapolis. He is a two-time New York State Champion winner for team and doubles competition. This year, he finished with a 202 average, the highest in his league by a massive 40 pins and, for the third consecutive year, he is the 200 game award champion. Jadyn plans to bowl in college and is in the process of deciding which school he will attend.
“There is not enough praise for the sportsmanship and commitment of Coach Washington, Jadyn and the entire bowling team,” said Director of Physical, Health Education and Athletics Mike McCoy. “These athletes enjoyed great success while also experiencing how teamwork makes everyone better.”
