The Greenburgh Central School District is proud to announce that Mr. Samuel Washington, science teacher at Woodlands High School, has been selected to join the 2025–2028 HHMI BioInteractive Ambassador Academy Cohort. Chosen from a highly competitive pool of more than 800 applicants, Mr. Washington is one of only 30 outstanding life and environmental science educators nationwide to receive this prestigious honor.
“I think my experience helped to set me apart,” said Mr. Washington. “Being accepted into fellowships such as Regeneron’s Hudson Valley STEM Teacher Initiative and the New York State Master Teacher Program, along with leading several educational workshops, has provided me with a broad background and the confidence to collaborate with HHMI. These experiences have equipped me with the tools and strategies needed as we transform the way science is taught. This truly is an opportunity to help shape science education on a national level.”
The HHMI BioInteractive Ambassador Academy, part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute—a leading biomedical research and science philanthropy organization—aims to make science education more inclusive, accessible, and engaging. The program connects students to the big ideas in biology and encourages creative, interdisciplinary, and active participation in the practices of real scientific research.
Over the next three years, Mr. Washington will take part in a robust professional development program centered on evidence-based teaching practices. As a BioInteractive Ambassador, he will promote learner-centered classrooms and lead high-quality workshops that model inclusive science instruction. Upon completion of the Academy, he will join a national network of Ambassadors committed to building authentic, equitable, and engaging science learning environments for all students.
