Falcons Winners’ Parade Celebrates Girls Teams and Bowling Standouts During Women’s History Month

School spirit filled the halls at Woodlands Middle High School as students and staff gathered for a Falcons Winners’ Parade organized by the Student Council. Held during Women’s History Month, the celebration recognized girls teams across the school while giving special honor to the Varsity Girls Bowling team for its success at Sectionals.

With the Woodlands band’s percussion section setting the rhythm, the parade created a lively show of support for female student-athletes and the pride they bring to the Falcons community.

The event gave special recognition to bowlers Kailani Ledesma and Sofia Ruiz, who qualified for the New York State Bowling Championship after standout performances at the Section 1 tournament.

The Lady Falcons entered Sectionals following an undefeated league season and remained in contention throughout the tournament, supporting one another through difficult frames while battling for the championship.

“This team has focused all season on ‘work, grit, and family,’ and that mindset carried them through Sectionals,” said coach Bettina Como. “The girls consistently support one another, especially during tough frames, and it’s that teamwork that kept us competing for the championship all day.”

Led by Ledesma and Ruiz, the Falcons remained in the hunt deep into the afternoon before finishing a hard-fought third place in the championship round.

With exceptional high series scores at the tournament, Ledesma and Ruiz earned spots on the elite Section 1 Composite Team, ranking among the top six bowlers in Section 1. They will travel to Syracuse on March 14 to compete in the New York State Championships.

Kailani thanked her teammates for their support, as well as the guidance and coaching of Ms. Como and Mr. Washington. Sofia also expressed her appreciation for the entire team.

“It’s been great being part of this team and seeing so many girls go through the program,” she said. “Everyone works hard and does their best, and it’s been a really great experience.”

This marks the second consecutive year that Woodlands bowlers have qualified for the state tournament, highlighting the continued strength of the program.

“To have Woodlands bowlers qualify for the State Championships for the second year in a row is something our entire program is proud of,” Como said. “It speaks to the dedication of these student-athletes and the strong team culture they’ve built together.”

As the parade concluded, the Woodlands community cheered on Ledesma and Ruiz as they prepare for states—while also celebrating the many girls who represent the Falcons through athletics throughout the year.
