A Message of Identity and Strength at WMHS Girls Club

Students in the Girls Club at Woodlands Middle High School recently welcomed Ms. Spells, a longtime Greenburgh resident and Woodlands alum parent, who returned to share a powerful message about identity, confidence, and leadership.

Speaking candidly and with conviction, Ms. Spells encouraged students to define themselves from within rather than allowing others to shape who they are. She spoke about the importance of self-respect, being true to oneself, and having the confidence to stand by one’s choices, even when faced with outside expectations or opinions. Her message resonated clearly: your values, goals, and beliefs - not someone else’s assumptions - should guide your path.

To bring that message to life, Ms. Spells shared a practical framework for leadership through what she described as the “4 P’s”: Purpose, Plan, Priority, and Performance. She explained that when students approach each day with intention, grounded in purpose, guided by a plan, focused on priorities, and followed through with performance, they take ownership of their decisions and their future.

“Ms. Spells connected with our students in a way that was both meaningful and empowering,” said Zuleyka Martinez, School Social Worker at WMHS. “Her message about self-respect and owning your identity really resonated. She gave our students something they can carry with them, not just as a mindset, but as a way to move through challenges with confidence and clarity.”

Her visit also reflected the strong connections that define the Greenburgh community. The two advisors of the Girls Club, Ms. Zuleyka Martinez and Ms. Kyle Cornell expressed that, as someone whose family has deep roots in Woodlands, Ms. Spells’ return underscored the District’s ongoing commitment to building responsive relationships grounded in trust, respect, and shared investment in students.
