Officer Henry Receives 2026 Nettie Jackson Extra Mile Award

Greenburgh Police Officer Henry was recognized as the recipient of the 2026 Nettie Jackson Extra Mile Award during the Greenburgh Central School District Board of Education meeting on June 16.

Nominated by Woodlands High School Principal Matthew Smith, Officer Henry was selected for her unwavering commitment to students, staff, and the broader school community. Through her daily presence in district schools and her genuine care for young people, she has become a trusted and valued member of the Greenburgh Central family.

In his nomination, Mr. Smith described Officer Henry as "a vital bridge who connects all Greenburgh Central schools to the community with her constant and caring presence." He also noted that "her approachability and genuine approach help build trust, making her a familiar and reassuring figure in the students' daily lives."

Officer Henry was surprised during the Board meeting when fellow members of the Greenburgh Police Department joined the celebration. As the recognition was announced, she was visibly moved, a reflection of the deep commitment she brings to supporting students, faculty, and staff each day.

Accepting the award, Officer Henry began by saying she was "speechless" before sharing her gratitude and commitment to serving young people. "I have always been for the youth. The youth is my passion," she said. "I have always known that my calling is service, and that's why I'm a police officer." She also emphasized the Greenburgh Police Department's commitment to community engagement, noting that the department is intentional in how it serves and supports residents. "I am accepting this on behalf of my unit," she said.

Whether building positive relationships with students, helping to create a safe and welcoming school environment, or serving as a trusted partner to district staff and families, Officer Henry consistently goes beyond the expectations of her role. Her dedication exemplifies the spirit of service, compassion, and community partnership that strengthens Greenburgh schools.

The Nettie Jackson Extra Mile Award is presented annually to members of the Greenburgh Central School District community who consistently provide outstanding service beyond their regular responsibilities in support of students and educational excellence.

The award is named in honor of Nettie Jackson (1924–2013), a compassionate and tireless advocate for children and public education. Throughout her life, she served as a concerned and activist parent, community leader, public school secretary, union president, and mentor to countless Greenburgh students. Her legacy continues to inspire those who go the extra mile on behalf of children and families, making Officer Henry a fitting recipient of this year’s award.
