Advanced Learning Program (ALP)

OVERVIEW
The Advanced Learning Program (ALP) is designed to provide learners with a curriculum that utilizes one or more of the following approaches: 1) tiered assignments, 2) self-paced work, 3) open-ended, self-directed assignments, 4) compacted curriculum, and/or 5) project-based learning.
The Advanced Learning Program begins in second grade and ends in sixth grade. Students who are in grade 1 will automatically be screened for ALP in the spring. Students in grades 2-5 who are not currently in ALP may be re-screened in the spring upon parent's request. Students in small class settings with high levels of support will not be screened for ALP. Because we value each student’s social and emotional learning and holistically evaluate a student for the program, students who are new to the school district may not be considered for ALP until they have completed one academic year in the Greenburgh Central School District (GCSD).
Selection for ALP is based on three components:
- The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
- State and Local Assessments (emphasis on end of year scores)
- Teacher Recommendation (considers cultural/linguistic diversity, socio-economic background, and exceptional learners)
The recommendation must be from a GCSD faculty member.
Notices for placement in ALP are sent to parents/guardians in June of each school year. If a student is not selected for placement in ALP, there is an appeal process which can be initiated at the school level. Appeals for placement into ALP may not be requested after the third week in August.
